First time in Florence

Here I’ve written about the route my walking tour will take through Florence. The walking tour involves walking through the center of Florence – a total of two square kilometers of the historic city center are the sights and monuments of architecture, sculpture, and history!

Let’s begin! We start with Piazza della Repubblica. Now there is the famous carousel, but in 59 AD it was the Roman Forum, meaning it was the center of Florence. The Romans named the town “Florentia,” or “blooming,” because then there were numerous fields covered with lilies. Since then, this flower is the symbol of the city, although it is often associated with “Iris.” The Roman Forum addressed the key issues: from politics to culture and religion.

Now it is the real center of the city! Several historic cafes are located in Republic Square. One café stands where the Jewish Ghetto once was, and another sells the legendary Florentine Cake. But don’t be distracted, because we are approaching the famous Duomo, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary with a flower – of course the flower is a lily! The main architectural masterpiece is the stunningly beautiful dome of the Duomo, which was created by Brunelleschi. The secret behind his creation is well kept and we still know little about it…

After the Piazza Duomo, the details of which can be found here, we proceed to the medieval quarter of the city. Here we see the legendary houses, castles, and courtyards. The quarter preserved the memory of the great poet Dante Alighieri, who sang, loved, and hated his city. Here is the Church of Dante and his house-museum.

Finally, we find ourselves at the most central square of the city, where centuries of Florentine fate was decided. It’s the Piazza della Signoria! The main decoration of the square is of course the Old Palace, the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of the city government. How many legends are associated with these places!

Once Leonardo da Vinci offered to make this area an open-air museum. The sculptures should have been placed in covered galleries, like in the Loggia dei Lanzi. But the project remained unfinished. The area is still home to many masterpieces from the bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo I to Perseus with Medusa. Before the Old Palace stand the famous statue of David by Michelangelo (now a copy).

Let’s proceed across the courtyard through the Uffizi Gallery (more details about the Uffizi are here.) we leave on the Arno embankment. Here there is the river that connects Florence to the sea. One of the most famous bridges is the Ponte Vecchio, the Old Bridge. Its history is closely connected with Florence, and the shops are filled with gold and jewelry of this masterpiece of medieval architecture.

Thus, during this walking tour of Florence with your private guide, youwill visit the main attractions of Florence.
